What is desires, from the day a person is born in the world, desires are also born with him, and these desires remain with him till his death. Human desires never decrease, but they go on increasing with the passage of time. Desires are like an endless shadow behind which man runs all his life.
When one of our desires ends, another desire takes birth. We think that if we get this thing, then our life will be better, but when we get that thing then we start running after something else. Desires have no limit, the more you run after it to fulfill it, the more it moves forward like a shadow. Just as we can never catch the shadow, we can never stop desires.
Let me try to explain this point through an incident.
.
A queen was about to take out a necklace of diamonds from her neck and hang it on a peg when an eagle came and plucked it and took away the necklace.
.
Seeing the shining diamonds, the eagle thought that there should be something to eat. He sat on a tree and started trying to eat.
.
Diamonds are hard. He groaned in pain when he hit it. He understood that this was not the thing of his business. He left the necklace hanging on the same tree and flew away.
.
That necklace to the queen was dear to her life. She told the king to find out about the defeat immediately or else she would stop eating and drinking. The king said that the other would get the necklace made but he insisted that he wanted the same necklace.
.
Everyone started searching but no one got any defeat. The queen had gone to Kop Bhavan. Defeated, the king even said that whoever finds the defeat, he will make him the officer of half the kingdom.
.
Now it’s a race. The officers and subjects of the king all started looking for defeat in the greed of half the kingdom.
.
Suddenly that necklace appeared to someone in a dirty drain. The necklace was visible, but it smelled bad, but in the greed of the state, a soldier jumped.
.
Hit a lot of hands and feet, but did not get defeated. Then the commander saw and he too jumped. Seeing both, some enthusiastic people also jumped. Then the Minister jumped.
.
In this way, more people standing inside the drain were churning it than those outside the drain. People kept coming and jumping but no one got defeated.
.
As soon as someone jumped into the drain, he would stop seeing the necklace. Exhausted, he would come out and stand on the other side.
.
The greed of half the kingdom was such that the great wise men and the prime ministers of the king were all ready to jump. Everyone was fighting that first I would jump in the drain, then I would first. There was a strange race.
.
In the meantime the king came to know about it. The king was afraid that half the kingdom would get out of hand, why shouldn’t I jump into it? The king also jumped.
.
A saint passed by. They were surprised to see the king, subjects, ministers, soldiers all covered in mud.
.
He asked — is there any tradition of jumping in the drain in this state? People told everything.
.
The saint started laughing, Oh brother ! Did anybody even look up ? Look up, he is hanging on a branch. What you see below is its shadow. The king was very embarrassed.
All of us are also behaving like the people of that state. The worldly thing in which we see happiness, peace and joy is actually like a necklace which is seen as a shadow in the form of momentary pleasures.
.
We live under the illusion that if we get such a thing, then life will change, everything will be fine. But this cycle is endless.
.
Worldly things cannot give complete happiness. Happiness is the defeat of peace diamonds, but it will be attained by being absorbed in God. Everything else is his shadow.
